Ask The Nurse Lady A Question!
How often should I have a regular physical?

Does a young person under 20 need to worry about getting regular physicals?
Dear Lisa,
Physical exams should occur at least every three years unless there is a history of illness or new symptoms occuring at the present time. The American Medical Association recommends a physical exam every 2-3 years for young adults over the age of 20. For adults over 40 they recommend a physical exam every 1-2 years.
For women an annual GYN exam should begin after a young woman becomes sexually active or at least by the age of 21. Regular Gyn exams help to prevent illness, detects cancer early, assists with diagnosis of STIs (sexually transmitted infections) or pregnancy for immediate medical care.
Hope this answers your question. Nurselady
