Halitosis, otherwise known as bad breath

My wife has been telling me that I have really, really bad breath and even though I brush my teeth and use listerine nothing seems to work. Are there any preventive things I can do? A better diet?

Dear Stevie,

Halitosis or bad breath can result from eating foods such as onion and garlic but most often a good brushing of the teeth eliminates the odor. The best thing to do is brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss at least once, and rinse with a mouthwash. Make sure you brush your tongue also as bacteria can get trapped on the tongue as well as in between your teeth.

If you still have a problem you should see your denist to see if you have peridontal disease or an abscess. If this proves negative then you might want to see a physician because there are several medical problems that can also cause halitosis.
If you are on medicine, some medications can cause foul mouth odor.

Sincerely, Nurselady
