Ask The Nurse Lady A Question!

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

I have been working with a student with chronic fatigue syndrome for over a year.  This is a rather new phenomenon in the medical field.  The person experiences extreme fatigue to the point of being immobilized. Symptoms include weakness, muscle aches and pains, confusion, impaired short-term memory, difficulty sleeping, sore throat and headaches.

Since the cause of CFS is still unknown, treatment consists of treating the presenting symptoms.  If a patient is complaining of a headache they may be given a pain reliever or if muscle pains are the problem an anti-inflammatory may be given.  Depression is often a secondary symptom due to lack of energy and the ability to maintain a normal lifestyle. Thus, many patients are medicated with antidepressants.

The family I have been working with is becoming very frustrated in the fact that there is very little improvement and to some extent the child is getting worse.  Hopefully more studies will reveal an answer.

I am very tired all the time I eat regularly I get out of the apartment I excersize 20 minutes a day. I drink enough water I take a multivitamin every other day along with B vitamins. I don’t want to be tired any more I don’t want to be sad and depressed I go to church I have a prayer group I pray daily. What is going on with me? Today I make myself eat in the morning I just wanted to go back to bed really feel sort of hopeless. I don’t want to be on anti depressants they made me feel horrible and I became addicted to them. Do you know anything about the blood type diet? I can’t really afford to become a vegatarian however it must be something that can be fixed I know millions of other people have chronic fatigue syndrome what do they do to get better.. does anyone every get better?
